Will stinker be last NFL game in Oakland?

- JOHN KRYK

The three words that best describe the last game of Week 16 in the NFL are as follows, and I quote: “Stink. Stank. Stunk.’

Yes, Grinch fans, if Monday night’s contest is the last NFL game played in Oakland — well, at least until the next time the Raiders move back — it’s too bad it has zero post-season ramifications.

Both the Raiders (3-11) and their visiting archrivals, the Denver Broncos (6-8), are out of playoff contention.

The fate of Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum might be the only thing up in the air; specifically, whether any upset Raiders fans vandalize the NFL’s oldest stadium.

The Raiders are relocating to Las Vegas, but their new stadium there will not be ready until 2020 and their lease at the Coliseum expires after this game. So, where will the Raiders play in 2019?

The NFL has given team owner Mark Davis until early February to find a place. Davis said he is ruling out no option.

One option would be bunking for a season across the bay with Major League Baseball’s San Francisco Giants at their waterside AT&T Park. Another might be to play farther down the bay at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, home of the Raiders’ Bay-area NFL rival, the San Francisco 49ers. Other speculative sites include Phoenix and San Antonio.

The last time an NFL team’s fans knew it was relocating before season’s end was in 1995. Cleveland Browns owner Art Modell had already secured a deal to move that team to Baltimore, where in 1996 it would be renamed the Ravens. (The Cleveland Browns were reborn in 1999 as an expansion franchise.)

The Raiders played their first 22 seasons in Oakland, before moving to Los Angeles. From 1982-94, the Raiders played at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, before moving back to Oakland in 1995.
