‘Life's too short for cheap beer'

- Steve Beauchesne is the co-founder and CEO of Beau’s brewery

“Hey 19-year-old Steve, what advice can I give you?” I don’t really have much to tell you that you won’t learn on the way, but here are a few important points:

Cherish every up and every

■ down and really suck the marrow out of the moments you’ll have. There’s going to be a lot of them, so strap in and enjoy the ride.

What else? Love comes easy,

■ but it’s hard to keep, you really have to work at it or you’ll lose it.

Oh, this one’s important: “Life’s

■ too short for cheap beer.”

“Thanks, 42-year-old Steve — now listen up, ’cause I have some words of youthful wisdom for you!

When you get old, don’t forget

■ to have fun. When you get caught up in a debate about politics or a discussion about your mortgage rate, remember your 19-yearold you, then tell yourself to shut up and go do something real. Getting old shouldn’t mean becoming boring. Don’t stop playing music, going to shows and playing games. Remember, there are more miserable adults than there are miserable kids.”

Keep my naive optimism and

■ protect it. Doing the right thing for the right reason will pay off, don’t trade your ideals for a quick buck, its just not worth it. Remember that you want to change the world, and remember that you believe it’s possible. I don’t care how many people tell you it can’t be done, remember how stubbornly I hold my convictions and don’t give in.

Most importantly, don’t let

■ your self-identity become nothing more than what you do to earn a paycheque. Wait, did you say we run a brewery? OK, well, um still, don’t let that define all of who you are, you are more than just your brewery ... but wow, that is pretty cool; good job, dude.”
