Redblacks ‘just want to win a game’

- TIM BAINES

It has come to this: If the Ottawa Redblacks lose Saturday in Toronto, they will finish the season as the worst team in the CFL.

But more important than not finishing last is trying to put some polish on what they’re doing on the football field. They’ve lost nine straight games and 13 of their past 14 to stumble to a 3-13 record, the same as the Argonauts. Toronto has already defeated Ottawa twice this season — 46-17

It’s a lot easier to be on a team when you’re getting pats on the back and when things are going well

in early September, then 28-21 two weeks ago.

“I just want to win a game. Believe me, it’s been way too long,” Redblacks coach Rick Campbell said. “That’s really all we’ve been focusing on — go to Toronto and get a win.”

There really hasn’t been a lot of positive out of what’s been happening on the football field for the past four months, but the players, through all the losses, have hung together.

“It’s a lot easier to be on a team when you’re getting pats on the back and when things are going well,” Campbell said. “When things aren’t, you learn about people. I feel fortunate to have a lot of quality people around here. No one’s pointing fingers or throwing people under the bus. We understand we have to get better, there’s no doubt about that. We’re going to hang together through this tough time and keep going.”

THE END AROUND: CFL Week, which features interaction with many of the top players, was supposed to be in Ottawa in March. It was cancelled because of CBA negotiations. The thought was the event would be in Ottawa in 2020. That won’t happen. The CFL is considering options . ... The Redblacks could go with Brendan Gillanders and Greg Morris again at running back. As for John Crockett, who could come off the sixgame injured list this week, Campbell said, “We would like to see Crockett again; whether that happens this week or next, we want to try and make it happen.”
