Baby born to woman who lost arms, legs in accident

- ELIZABETH PAYNE

A Gatineau woman who lost her arms and legs in 2017 after crashing into a hydro pole on Christmas Eve has given birth to a son.

Sabryna Mongeon, who almost died in the accident near Luskville, gave birth in Laval over the weekend. She posted pictures of herself on Facebook and Instagram with her newborn son.

Doctors had to amputate her arms and legs after the accident in which a hydro pole landed on her vehicle. When she exited the car, she stepped on a wire and was electrocuted, seriously damaging her limbs. She had been on her way home from her mother’s house in bad weather.

Her story drew support, and funds, from around the world. A fundraising campaign launched by her sister raised about $200,000.

She met her partner, according to Quebec media reports, at the rehabilitation centre in Montreal where she lived for months after the accident.

On Facebook, a friend wrote: “It has been a long time since I’ve seen you with a smile showing so much tenderness and well-being.” epayne@postmedia.com
