Scorsese details Marvel critique
Martin Scorsese recently took to the New York Times opinion page to explain how his criticism that Marvel movies aren’t cinema is based on how they squeeze out auteur films by the likes of Spike Lee, Kathryn Bigelow or Paul Thomas Anderson. “No matter whom you make your movie with, the fact is that the screens in most multiplexes are crowded with franchise pictures,” said Scorsese, 76, the director of films such as Goodfellas, Casino and his newest release, The Irishman. Modern blockbuster franchises are “market-researched, audience-tested, vetted, modified, revetted and remodified until they’re ready for consumption,” he wrote.
