Koenigsegg’s 1,700-hp hybrid is here

- ALEX REID

Koenigsegg has revealed a new grand tourer that could point to the future of supercars, and maybe even the future of cars in general.

It’s called the Gemera, and it’s like nothing we’ve ever seen. Featuring four seats, two doors, all-wheel drive, all-wheel steering, top-exit exhausts, and one extremely innovative motor, this is a GT car like no other.

A twin-turbo 2.0-litre three-cylinder engine produces 600 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque, and works with three electric motors — two in the rear, one in the front.

The electric motors produce a cumulative 1,100 hp, making for a combined output of 1,700 hp, which propels the Gemera to 100 km/h from zero in just 1.9 seconds.

The power output is not the most interesting thing about this engine, though. Thanks to its use of

“freevalve” technology, the engine doesn’t need a camshaft for timing. Instead, the valves are electrically operated for greater control, and more power and efficiency.

Instead of running on gasoline, the engine takes ethanol, or CO2-neutral methanol. This makes it “at least as CO2-neutral as a pure electric car running on a ‘good’ electric source,” such as hydroelectric or wind power, the maker says.

Most interestingly, though, the cabin apparently has enough space for four adults, plus four carry-on bags.

The car is rumoured to have a price tag of 1.7 million euro (CDN$2.5 million) and be limited to just 300 units.
