ADD SPLASH OF COLOUR

Hues that feed the soul

- NATALIE DEANE

Spring is in the air which means our thoughts turn to spending more time outdoors and bringing more colour into our lives — whether it’s inside or out.

I had a chance to speak to one of Canada’s top home decorating experts, Janice Fedak, owner of Janice Fedak Colour and Design.

Fedak is also a member of the Colour Marketing Group and frequently appears as a guest expert on HGTV and W Network.

Here, she offers insights into the latest colour trends and tips on how to add a splash of colour to your home.

Q What is the hottest trending colour for 2020? How can you add it to a typical “greige” space?

A Pantone’s Colour of the Year, Classic Blue, is a beautiful indigo shade — trustworthy, calming yet also invigorating. It’s the perfect complement to grey, taupe and off-white. Pair it with some of the other trend colours this year — soft yet grown up pastels — light blush, seaside ethereal blues, and gentle nudes. For a more playful pallet, inject hot pink, deep teal or aqua marine. And one of my favourites that can reinvent a greige space are the re-emerging new clay shades and deepened corals. All equally important and each speaking to the need for colours that are mindful, fill our

souls and bring joy.

Q A home with a colour theme always looks so put together. How do you make a colour or style theme flow throughout a home?

A One of the easiest ways to create flow, is to replicate the same colour, or shades of the colour in various applications throughout your home — for example, the wall colour in one room becomes the upholstery colour in the next room, and accessories in the next. Always remember to use in a variety of textures and on different surfaces. And you can enhance that flow by using one unifying thread of colour on all your baseboards and trim. Be sure to pick the shade that best blends with each other colour that it is adjacent to, and voila, you’ll have perfect flow!

Q How do you spice up a dated interior?

A The best thing to do is to

“edit” and replace the most tired looking pieces with some new standout items that are part of this year’s colour trends. Always remember that there are several new colours introduced each year … so be sure to pick the colours that make you feel great. And place them in areas where you can really enjoy them, and they will for sure add some excitement to your space. A new throw, some toss cushions, a set of dishes or a fabulous piece of art! Be sure that they blend with the rest of the items that you decide to keep, and you will have created your own personal trend-worthy palette.

Q What are your top three tips for someone looking to colour their world?

A First, determine what your colour personality is. Look to magazines, the internet and social media and you’ll soon see that you are attracted to a specific colour look. And if there are several, tap into them all in different rooms. Second, try them by painting out a wall — it’s the easiest and most economical way to inject some colour into your space. Instant transformation and colour gratification. And once you tire of a colour, simple paint again. Lastly, don’t be afraid to use colour. If colour makes you feel good, then you should wrap your walls in the colours that feed your soul ... and then you’ll always feel like your home is your personal oasis.
