The Bradley has been home to Muriel O’Meara for almost a year, and, she says, it has proved to be the perfect place for her.

“I am very happy here,” says the mother of five. “All my children live in Ottawa, so I see them often. Two visited me yesterday. Another two will be coming to see me later today.”

The decision to return to Ottawa, where O’Meara and her husband had lived between 1972 and their retirement to their earlier location in Pembroke, came at her children’s suggestion, after his passing. For the first year, she lived alone in an apartment close to one of her daughters.

“But,” says O’Meara, “I had sold my car before moving to Ottawa because I was nervous about driving in the big city. I am more comfortable in smaller places. But, without a car, I needed someone to take me for groceries or appointments or anywhere.”

She was bothered by her lack of independence — a problem that was solved as soon as she and two of her daughters saw all that The Bradley had to offer.

“We just fell in love with the place right away,” says O’Meara. “I enjoy everything about The Bradley. The building is beautiful. I like the people. We have lots of activities.”

Among her favourites are line dancing, board games and bingo. As someone who grew up on a farm, she also loves being outside and says that she thoroughly enjoys tending one of the raised gardens provided for Bradley residents.

The landscaping of the property includes a pathway around the building for residents who enjoy walking — alone or with their dogs. The Bradley is pet-friendly and, says Craig Wonnell, one of the live-in managers, “We are all about family here.” And that includes the fourlegged family members.

Among the many indoor activities on offer are an assortment of movement and fitness classes from Tai Chi and yoga to Zumba (standing or sitting, with modified moves adjusted for participants if required) and even boxing for enthusiasts. For those who prefer working out alone, the exercise room is equipped with state-ofthe-art machines.

For other types of entertainment, the movie theatre (complete with popcorn machine) and the wellequipped library offer continuing enjoyment. Virtual golf and archery are also available via the large-screen television in the TV lounge. Billiards and the card room offer further variety in the entertainment department. Other amenities on site include a business centre and a beauty salon/barber shop.

The well-designed community spaces and conversation corners around fireplaces add to the sense of living comfortably. Linen and housekeeping services, together with immediate attention to any adjustments within suites are part of the regular care for residents. The aim throughout, emphasizes Wonnell, is to combine care and convenience with independence and the sense of being part of a happy family.

O’Meara no longer needs to concern herself with shopping for groceries, of course, as The Bradley offers three multi-course, chef-prepared meals daily, as well as access to snacks, fruits and an ice cream machine.

The menu is varied as The Bradley is often provided with suggested recipes and frequently reviews their culinary program. In addition, food alternatives are always available on request and special dietary needs accommodated if possible.

Access to appointments is covered by the Bradley Bus, which regularly takes residents to any required medical appointments. The 21-seat bus is also on hand for scenic drives, destination shopping and other outings (COVID-19 restrictions permitting).

The suites, ranging from large studios to one- and two-bedroom suites in various layouts, have individual climate controls and all are equipped with emergency call buttons, so that one of the live-in managers can respond immediately. Many of the suites have balconies overlooking the landscaped grounds. All offer a sense of spaciousness and attention to detail, as do the common areas.

Suites at The Bradley begin at $2,895 and this fee includes all meals and utilities. The only additional optional expenses are a personal telephone and Internet connection.
