A click of your mouse can help to crown the Ottawa Citizen People’s Choice Award winner at the Greater Ottawa Home Builders’ Association’s (GOHBA) Virtual Housing Design Awards presentation. After weeks of competition on gohbavote. ca, the industry’s best projects were narrowed down to 16 finalists, and a final round of voting started Nov. 3.

“While we usually hold the annual awards at a large gala, this year we’re taking the event online,” says Linda Oliveri Blanchard, chairperson of the Ottawa Housing Design Awards, which recognize excellence in the new home and renovation industry. “That means anyone can watch live as the awards are announced. They can see the best entries in each category and tune in to see if their pick for the Ottawa Citizen People’s Choice Award takes home the big prize.”

While the event consists of various categories judged by respected industry professionals from across Canada, the Ottawa Citizen People’s Choice Award is considered one of the biggest honours, as it is chosen by the general public. Oliveri Blanchard says it’s a way to see what speaks to the average person.

“We get to see people’s opinions on design tastes and trends,” she says. “This helps our industry know how to design projects which appeal to the wants and needs of consumers. And we can see if the average person agrees with the professional judges. Ottawa is a leader when it comes to residential construction and design. Our city should be incredibly proud of this, and I look forward to showcasing the very best of the best.”

The Ottawa Citizen People’s Choice Award also creates an opportunity to get inspired. In addition to voting for entries in the final round of competition, voters can also view galleries of each finalist’s project, allowing them to browse a wide range of designs and professionals.

“For years, we would host the Ottawa Citizen People’s Choice Award voting at the Fall Home Show,” explains Oliveri Blanchard. “Our booth became an inspiration and valuable resource to find quality renovators and new home builders, and the types of beautiful living spaces they could create. The same concept applies to our website. There are 160 projects for the public to peruse and use as a source for ideas. Think of it as a giant online inspiration board.”
