Four bodies in wreckage of fire in Oxford Mills
Four bodies have been found at the scene of a house fire in North Grenville, Ontario Provincial Police said Wednesday.
While it was too early to determine how the tragedy unfolded, police said they did not suspect foul play.
The fire on Sunday destroyed the home in Oxford Mills. Earlier this week police were looking for four people left unaccounted for as a result of the fire.
“Investigators have recovered the remains of four people. While their identities have not yet been confirmed by the Regional Coroner's Office, family members have been notified,” the OPP said in a news release.
The Office of the Fire Marshal and the coroner's office were continuing their investigations with the help of the Grenville County OPP.
While police told family members they believed the victims recovered from the scene were the four missing people, police couldn't release more details until post-mortem examinations confirmed their identities, OPP spokesman Bill Dickson said.
“It's definitely not an easy matter to identify these individuals,” he added.
While the investigation into the origin of the fire continued, Dickson said police did not currently suspect anything criminal.
“We're not looking at any obvious signs of foul play in this,” he said.
Grenville OPP officers were called at 6:15 p.m. Sunday to help North Grenville firefighters with a fully engulfed house fire at 1308 Stone Rd. in Oxford Mills.
The firefighters called for mutual aid in the form of a tanker truck from the Merrickville Fire Department, which responded.
Fire officials found three vehicles on the property, one of them heavily damaged by the fire. The other two had heat radiation damage.
Earlier this week, police said the four people whose whereabouts remained unknown at the time were all adults and the home belonged to an older couple.
