Too much choice can be overwhelming. That is certainly the way it seems for anyone considering retirement living for themselves or a loved one.

The long list of possibilities includes 100 or more retirement communities in Ottawa and the surrounding area, as well as long-term care and homecare options.

It would be so much simpler if you had help in narrowing the field when you are deciding where you want to spend the rest of your life. In fact, such a service has existed in Ottawa since 2013. Over the years, the knowledgeable staff of Solva Senior Living have helped many seniors find the most comfortable option for them.

“We sit down with everyone — the client and family members — and have an indepth conversation to find out exactly what they are looking for,” says Solva’s program director, Rachel Borzecki. “We have been around for a long time and we work with a lot of retirement homes, so we know them really well and are able to find a retirement home that is a good match for the client.

“If a retirement community doesn’t fit their needs, we can match them with homecare services or even help them look into long-term care. Our employees have over 30 years of combined experience in longterm care and home care.”

The next step, explains Borzecki, is to “follow through with the whole process,” which includes actual or virtual tours of the places most likely to suit the client, detailed note-taking during visits and debriefing afterwards.

“We take clients through all the steps between deciding and moving in,” says Borzecki, emphasizing that advocacy to ensure people understand their rights when moving to a retirement community is all part of the comprehensive service that Solva offers.

And best of all, the service is entirely free for the clients. “There is absolutely no cost, contract or obligation. We do not try to sell anything. We are totally unbiased. We simply discuss the situation with compassion and help narrow down your search quickly,” says Borzecki. “We look out for the best interests of our clients and are there to save them a lot of time and stress.”

“I find they give very balanced and honest information to help us make informed choices,” says Danay BakerAndresen, whose father was brought from Quebec to a retirement community in Ontario. “They provided great recommendations and considerations. Now Dad (with dementia) requires more care and they are assisting again. I couldn’t have done this without them.”
