Gatineau `wins' title again of worst road in Quebec

Georges Street takes over in annual CAA campaign where citizens nominate roads

-

According to CAA- Québec, Georges Street in Gatineau in the city's Buckingham and Masson-angers sectors is the worst road in the province. And it's not the first time Gatineau has been the “winner.”

The dubious honour of worst road in 2023 was awarded after Caa-québec's annual campaign, in which citizens were invited to nominate roadways.

“We've lost count of the many times Outaouais has appeared in our ranking over the years,” Caa-québec said in a statement.

Route 329 in St-adolphe-d'howard in the Laurentians scored the silver metal, while Saguenay—lacst-jean's Route des Fondateurs took bronze.

OK, but what about Montreal? Fret not, here are the worst on the island: Notre-dame Street East; L'acadie Boulevard; Christophe-colomb Avenue; Côte-deliesse Road; St-laurent Boulevard.

Meanwhile in Laval, your vehicle's shocks will thank you if you avoid Laurentides Boulevard, Highway 13 and Dagenais Boulevard West. That still leaves ... well, Highway 15 or the 440, depending on construction schedules.

Sophie Gagnon, Caa-québec's vice-president of public affairs and road safety, had some harsh words for the province: “Neglected maintenance, insufficient investment, aging and obsolete infrastructure: These are some of the reasons behind the premature deterioration of our network.”

Caa-québec promises to contact authorities “in charge of the top 10 arterial roads in this dismal ranking to inform them and learn about their investment intentions. A reminder will be issued before the end of the year, should the need arise, to stress the importance of road maintenance.”

Gatineau's Boulevard de la Gappe, named the province's worst road in 2022, got some road-patching love during the year, according to Caa-québec.

The worst roads campaign ran from April 12 to May 8. Everyone who uses a road — from pedestrians to truckers — was invited to vote. The organization received 5,771 votes in 2023.

On the other side of the Ottawa River, the national capital had only one listing on Ontario's 10 worst roads this year, and Carling Avenue ranked only fourth, one spot worse (better?) than its fifth-place showing in 2022.

According to CAA Ontario, Carling Avenue was outdone by Barton Street East in Hamilton, Eglinton Avenue West in Toronto and County Road 49 in Prince Edward County.

The rest of Ontario's worst 10 included three more roadways in Toronto and one each in Orillia, Hamilton and Mississauga.

A year ago, Bronson Avenue in Ottawa ranked No. 9 on the 10-worst list for the province.
