OLDER ATHLETES ENJOY COMPETITION AND COMMUNITY AT THE ASC GAMES

-

From February 5th-9th, All Seniors Care (ASC) retirement residences across the nation were abuzz with the energy and enthusiasm of the 15th Annual ASC Seniors Games. The week was filled with excitement, cheers, and laughter as competitors aged 74 to 104 battled it out for gold, silver, and bronze medals in 28 ASC retirement communities across Canada. These older adults, each with their own story of resilience and strength, gathered not just for medals but for the joy of participation and the celebration of lifelong fitness.

The games began with athletes Walking and Rolling through set indoor courses before heading to the Opening Ceremonies, where they met VIPS and local dignitaries. Day 2 of the ASC Seniors Games—and the first day of competition—kicked off with older adults limbering up with a game of Bean Bag Toss before turning their attention to the National Medal in Pétanque.

Throughout the week, events ranged from physical challenges to cognitive contests, culminating each day with an awards ceremony. Whether over the precision of bocce ball or the strategy of cards, competitors cheered each other on, shared stories of past glories, and formed bonds that transcended the confines of the games. Themed culinary delights and live entertainment rounded out each day, ensuring an inclusive environment for all.

The theme of the Games, “When Life Gives You Lemons,” saw residents celebrating all the ways to “Make Lemonade.” At College Park I in Regina, SK, nonagenarian Henry (Hank) R., a seven-time medalist, shared his philosophy: “At 97, staying active isn’t an option; it’s a necessity. The games are a highlight of my year, offering a chance to connect with friends and stay active.”

The culmination was the announcement of the National Medalists, a moment that brought both tears and cheers. But beyond the medals and accolades, the true victory was in the participation itself—a powerful reminder of the importance of social connection and mutual support, especially in one’s golden years.

A part of the All Seniors Care commitment to providing older adults with innovative ways to enjoy an active and healthy lifestyle, the Seniors Games are the result of planning and hard work by a large team of resident volunteers and Chefs de Mission in each building.
