Little Bird soars into Canadian Screen Awards
Little Bird got some big honours Wednesday, snagging the most television nominations for the 2024 Canadian Screen Awards.
Based on the Sixties Scoop, in which the Canadian government removed Indigenous children from their families, the Crave/ APTN limited series is up for 19 awards — including best drama series, best direction, best supporting performer (Braeden Clarke) and best lead performer (Darla Contois and Ellyn Jade).
The CBC dramedy Sort Of earned 18 nominations for its final season and will seek awards for directing, writing, editing and supporting comedy performer (Amanda Cordner, Ellora Patnaik and Supinder Wraich), among others.
Workin' Moms, CBC'S comedy about motherhood, racked up the third most nominations. The series from Catherine Reitman earned 12 nods for its final season. They include best ensemble performance in a comedy, best lead performer in a comedy (for both Reitman and Dani Kind), and best comedy series.
In the film categories, Blackberry was tops. Chronicling the rise and fall of the Blackberry cellphone, it led in nominations not only for this year but also for the history of the awards. Blackberry's 17 nods include best motion picture, best direction, and best performance in a leading role (Jay Baruchel) as well as supporting role (Glenn Howerton).
In the best motion picture category, Blackberry will compete against Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person, which received 12 nominations including best picture, best performance in a leading role (Sara Montpetit), and best director (Ariane Louis- Seize). Also in the running are Infinity Pool (11 nominations), Red Rooms, Richelieu, and Solo.
The CSAS will unfold over four ceremonies in Toronto this May. Organized by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television, they begin May 28 with awards for news, entertainment and sports. May 29 spotlights television. May 30 focuses on documentary, factual, lifestyle, and reality awards, as well as the trophies for the cinematic arts. Then, on May 31, a pre-taped gala will air on CBC and CBC Gem. Comedian Mae Martin is the host.
