Flood watch issued for Pembroke region after rain event advisory

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry has issued flood watch for the Pembroke region after a “significant multi-day rain event” was forecast to begin on Saturday.

“Landscape conditions with dormant vegetation and saturated soils have limited capacity to store additional moisture,” said the ministry in a release issued Friday.

The forecast indicates total rainfall of near 50 mm is possible, but storm tracks and total precipitation remain uncertain.

“Although no widespread flooding is expected at this time, water levels and flow in rivers and lakes will increase, and flooding in low-lying areas and areas with poor drainage is possible,” said the Ministry of Natural Resources.

Residents and visitors in the area have been advised to keep a close watch on conditions and exercise caution around rivers and streams and to alert and monitor children to possible dangers.

Meanwhile, a flood warning has been issued for the North Bay district including the Lake Temagami, Sturgeon River, Lake Nipissing and Upper French River areas. The North Bay district warning is in effect until May 2.

According to the Ontario River Regulation Planning Board, water levels along the main stem of the Ottawa River are slightly above normal for this time of year from Mattawa down to Pembroke due to recent precipitation.

Particularly vulnerable areas are low-lying segments of known flood-prone areas, which may experience varying degrees of impact as lake and river levels escalate due to heightened precipitation levels. The statement warns that minor flooding in low-lying areas may occur over the next few days.

To reduce flood damage, the Ministry of Natural Resources recommends removing yard clutter, securing outdoor furniture and items on or around the shoreline and storing belongings and important documents in watertight containers and says it will continue to monitor the weather and provide updates.
