Our Canada

Harvesting Summer’s Joys As you know, our August - September issue typically arrives at subscribers’ homes and on newsstands in mid - July—the height of summer! So, be prepared to celebrate all-things summer on the pages to follow, from hiking in the great outdoors, in this case British Columbia’s Meadows in the Sky Trail (Our Travels, page 20) to boating with the family (The Debonaire, page 24) and enjoying Canada’s abundant wildlife (Flocks of Fun, page 40).

If you’re a confirmed shutterbug, summer is an excellent time to get out there and try something new. That’s exactly what Eric Goggin of Salisbury, N.B., has been up to—snapping photos and shooting video via the fully integrated camera on his Phantom 3 drone. Talk about taking talent to new heights! Check out Eric’s high-flying photo essay on page 8.

Although most of September is technically considered summer, it’s also the beginning of the harvest season. So, in addition to the iconic cover photo provided by Janice Andrews of Winnipeg, which bridges the gap between summer and fall nicely, we’ve included a one-of-a-kind story about the annual Scarecrow Invasion and Family Festival that takes place in the fun-loving town of Meaford, Ont., to celebrate the harvest. From mid-september well into October, Meaford is literally overrun with handcrafted scarecrows of all types and there are a host of family-friendly activities taking place. You have to see this My Hometown to believe it (page 56)!

And, as you’ll notice to the right, our annual photo contest is under way! “Share Your Canada” in photos for a chance to win a portion of $1,000 in prizes! Gary George, gary_ george@ rd. com
