- Making Memories Gary George, gary_ george@ rd. com

I’m a firm believer in the notion that everyone has a story to tell or a personal memory worth sharing. If you read this issue from cover to cover, I think you’ll see what I mean. Let’s begin with Jill Yoneda of Victoria, a champion free diver and an active endurance swimmer now in her 40s. She and two other amazingly talented swimmers, Susan Simmons and Dale Robinson, recently became the first people to traverse the Great Bear Sea along B.C.’S central coast. The trio were in search of adventure, for sure, but also wished to generate awareness and funds for causes close to their heart. They succeeded on all counts, and created more than a few memories in the process, which they share in Showcase on page 16.

And how about Jenna Davis of Oakville, Ont.?

At 25, this young Canadian has already visited and written about 45 countries, travelling on the strength of her blogging skills and belief in responsible tourism. Her inspiring story is our Canadians Abroad selection on page 52. Then, in our Wheels department, on page 26, there’s Cadillac Ruth and her beloved “Big Daddy,” a vintage Caddy that she’s owned for four decades and comes equipped with a trunk-full of nostalgia that I’m sure you’ll enjoy.

Some memories are harder to bear, but are nevertheless worth exploring and sharing. A case in point: our Remembrance Day feature on page 58 in which a son, transfixed by a WWII photo of his father and two comrades-in-arms, finds connections in unexpected places as he researches the image.

Once you’ve put this issue down, why not share a story or memory of your own? We’d love to hear from you at ourcanada.ca.
