Anyone who volunteers knows the joy, fulfillment, sense of belonging, challenge and feeling of being appreciated that comes along with it. There are a multitude of volunteer positions in our fair land. No matter what your aptitude or passion there are many ways to contribute to society. It was great to read about Lani Domaloy’s experience (Cause for Applause, August-september 2018) after she moved to Victoria and explored volunteer opportunities in her community.

When I finished my career, I looked around for a meaningful volunteer opportunity and decided to pursue dog-walking at the Toronto Humane Society. Our condominium doesn’t allow pets and we travel often, so every week I have the opportunity to assist our furry friends finding their forever home. After 12 years, my shift has become one of the highlights of my week.

Whether you are a student in need of real experience out in the world, a worker who needs a break in the routine of your daily job, are looking at retirement and want to give back to society, or you are keen to meet like-minded individuals, there is something out there just right for you. There are even websites to assist you in the search. Canada would not be the welcoming, diverse, caring, abundant land that it is without the valuable contribution of enthusiastic volunteers. In addition, offering our services is a glorious way to enrich our lives.
