Our Canada

HEAVENS ABOVE!

-

Especially these days, I find myself pondering life’s mysteries and oddball quirks while staring up at the sky overhead, be it during the day or at night, usually in our own backyard here in Laval or from our front balcony up at the lake in nearby cottage country. There’s no better respite from the worrisome world swirling around us than to catch a glimpse of something truly wondrous in the sky overhead as you chase down your thoughts and dreams.

Christy Turner of Calgary knows better than I about the soul-soothing nature of the night sky, as you’ll appreciate when you take in her photo essay, “Aurora Hunting, Canadian-style,” on page 8.

Likewise, Catherine Sands-unruh of Parksville, B.C., has a real feel for wide-open spaces and places of natural splendour, as demonstrated in her Our Travels story about road-tripping through the Prairies of Alberta on page 22.

Sometimes, the skies above bring back memories of bygone days, particularly if you happen to be visiting a landmark from your youth. Such was the case for Donald Lugers of Windsor, Ont., who recently returned to the Boblo Island amusement park, where he played as a kid, worked as a teen and learned a lot about himself, his father and life in general. Read all about this amazing, historic locale situated in the Detroit River between “Motor City” and Donald’s hometown in The Way It Was on page 60.

At this time of year, the skies above are alive with flying critters of all kinds and the land below them is in full bloom. Enjoy the resulting photo-ops that several readers took advantage of in “Petals & Wings,” on page 44.

By the end of this issue, I hope you’ll share my feeling that it’s been uplifting reading about everyone’s experiences—and that things are looking up. Continue to stay safe, everyone!
