Measuring Up!
I am a wee bit appalled that a Canadian magazine called Our Canada does not realize that our country has been using the metric system for almost 50 years. Each issue has four recipes in “A Taste of Canada.” The measurements are not in metric. It is very dicult to shop for 3 oz. of pudding mix or 3 oz. of semisweet chocolate chips when the packaging in the supermarkets comes only in metric measures. If you feel the need to include the
English measures then those should be included in brackets after the standard metric measures. Oven temperatures should be in Celsius with Fahrenheit followed in brackets. Pan-size measurements also should be in centimetres with the English measure followed in brackets. I brought this to the attention of Our Canada several years ago but have seen no follow-up. Please do not dumb down Canadians. We should be long past the point where people are adapting to metric. Do not prolong this adaptation by refusing to use the Metric measurement system in your publications. John Newman, Nanaimo, B.C.
EDITOR’S NOTE: Our Canada recipes are from a shared database where are all recipes submitted from fellow Canadians are in Imperial measurements. Many readers still prefer Imperial. We include a conversion chart for handy reference and to avoid the clutter of presenting two systems of measurement per recipe. Thanks for your input, John!
