Lost and Found

This frantic newlywed owed his new brother-in-law a big thank you!

- by Frank Koenig, Morinville, Alta.

Many years ago not long after we were married, my wife, Margaret, and I went to her parents’ place for a weekend visit in the fall. They happened to be pouring cement for a new step and walkway outside their back door, so of course I helped out. We completed the job and were quite proud of the result.

Later that night after supper, I noticed that my wedding ring was missing. The whole family searched the house with no luck. The next day I was not a happy camper. After breakfast the search continued outside but again, no luck. At that point we came to the conclusion that the ring must have slipped o my finger while doing the cement work and it was a goner.

We returned home minus one wedding ring. I felt sick at the thought and kept asking myself why I hadn’t taken it o before doing the cement work. This was a very hard lesson for me to learn. My wife’s family said they would continue looking around just in case as you never know— they might get lucky and find it.

The following spring, we got the miracle phone call. It seems that my ten-yearold brother-in-law, Mike, was outside playing in the yard and guess what he found? My mother-in-law phoned to give me the good news. It was a joyous day. When I asked her what I could give Mike as a thank you, she suggested that we buy him a new pair of jeans for school— so that is just what we did. He was quite happy to get his new blue jeans.

Luckily, the situation ended well for us and was quite a learning experience for me! I was just 21 years old at the time and a newlywed. We recently celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary and this incident has and will remain in our memories forever. ▪
