Sally’s Search

-

One cold March morning little Sally was awakened by the sound of the television coming from the family room. Her father was watching The Weather Network. As she listened, Sally could hear the weatherman giving the morning temperatures. Then the man said, “Don’t worry folks, spring is just around the corner.”

Sally got very excited when she heard these words because she wanted to go outside and splash in the puddles in her new rubber boots. She could also go and play in the backyard under the cherry tree that bloomed every spring with bright pink blossoms.

Quietly she slipped out of bed and tiptoed to the door of her room. She peeked around the corner and looked down the hall. It looked exactly as it had the night before. Her tiny feet made no noise as she went from room to room, peeking around the corners into every room of the house. She even looked out of a window, but all she could see was the snow-covered driveway.

By now her tummy was starting to rumble, so she made her way to the kitchen and slid into her place at the breakfast table. A few minutes later, her father walked into the room and sat down at the head of the table. He noticed Sally’s crestfallen face and asked her why she was looking so sad.

Tearfully she replied, “I heard the weatherman say that spring was just around the corner, but when I looked I couldn’t find it anywhere. I guess it got lost.”

Her father chuckled, “No, darling, spring didn’t get lost, it just hasn’t arrived yet. What the weatherman meant is that the vernal equinox, or the first day of spring, is just a few days away. When the temperature starts to rise, the snow will begin to melt, and the flowers will start blooming. Then we’ll know that spring has truly arrived.”

Boy, grownups sure do talk funny sometimes, Sally thought to herself as she dried her tears and began to eat her breakfast. Louise Mcgorman,
