Spruce up our beaches

-

Could not agree more with the June 8th letter by Shirley Macleod critiquing the condition of our beaches. I could go on and on but here are some areas of concern I have noticed since moving here and by the way, seems to me they were kept in much better shape when camping here as a child with my parents.

Anyways I would bet I am not the only one who thinks we could do a much better job.

The few fire pits we have are continually a mess.

Those who feel dog bylaws don’t apply to them still allow their pets access to the beaches. I still see people smoking. Garbage cans smell terribly, probably because they are designed to contain copious amounts of trash.

Geese, probably the messiest creatures, wander at large.

The Skaha Lake Beach retaining wall is being undermined.

The Skaha beach area is being considered for a water slide.

I realize there are costs involved but we need to cherish the jewels we have. Some ideas that might help: The sand is filthy. How about adding a more desirable grade.

The small bay with the frolicking children is very rocky. Bet you the Challenge Penticton folks would appreciate a more inviting entry point for their swim.

Cleanup crews should do their job daily.

It might pay to investigate how the beaches in Hawaii are kept so alluring, especially when tourist pressures are much greater than ours. Paul Crossley Penticton
