100+ riders set to hit the road

More than 100 male and female riders ages 11-19 will be competing in the annual Hayman Classic B.C. Youth Cycling Championsh­ip Friday to Sunday in the South Okanagan.

The three-segment event features time trials Friday near Summerland, criterium Saturday in Penticton and road racing Sunday in the Oliver area.

Friday’s time trials start at 5 p.m. just west of Summerland on the Princeton-Summerland Road to Fish Lake Road in Faulder.

Distances range from eight kilometres for the under-13 division to 22 kilometres for the under-19 group. Sign-on commences at 3:30 p.m.

On Saturday at 8 a.m., riders will take part in the criterium on 1.25-kilometre course on Riverside Drive in Penticton. Sign-on opens at 7 a.m.

A banquet will be held Saturday night at the Penticton Lakeside Resort, with awards presented to the top finishers in the time trials and criterium.

On Sunday, the cyclists are back at it for the road race at 8 a.m. that begins and ends at Southern Okanagan Secondary in Oliver.

The under-13 boys and girls will do a 21K course, the under-15 boys and girls go 42K, under-17 girls 63K, under-17 boys and under19 girls go 84K and under-19 boys 105K. Sign-on for the road races starts at 7 a.m. For more informatio­n on the races, go online to www.haymanclas­sic.ca.
