Majority of one: Trump

- Ron Barillaro Penticton

Dear Editor: Well, the die is cast and the rival combatants are poised for the upcoming battles of rhetoric prior to the November election in the United states.

On one side we have the first female candidate ever to be successfully nominated as the party representative. The lady has political experience in her portfolio.

On the other hand we have a brash, blow-hard, bigoted, sycophantic businessman who, with support from his party, will be their presidential candidate, like it or not! He has no real political experience or understanding except for what he “shoots from the lip.” He makes comments that are racist in text and yet he says that they are taken out of context and makes an almost but not quite apology for them. He promises to make America great... again! He doesn’t really say how, but promises anyway.

In democratic society we have come to understand the term majority has a definite meaning. The dictionary gives the following meaning for majority: “a number of voters or votes, jurors, or others in agreement, constituting more than half of the total number.” Of course you knew that! Silly me!

If this is the case, how is it that the illustrious Mr. Trump pontificates on many national issues that he is going to fix? Is he all of a sudden a majority of one?

The likes of Caligula, Nero, Alexander the Great, Caesar, Mussolini, and Adolph Hitler espoused a similar idea and it got them nowhere. It seems that Trump has overlooked the fact that history can and does repeat itself.

Trump puffs out his chest and boasts of the things that he will do to make America great. The rhetoric begins with the word “I.”

Some of these are: Building a border wall between the U.S. and Mexico (which he says Mexico must pay for) to keep undesirables out; finding and deporting approximately 11 million illegal immigrants back to where they came from (primarily Hispanics.); boost U.S. presence in the China Seas to discourage “adventurism”; grow the military so big that no one will want to mess with them; bar Syrian refugees from entering the country and kick out those that are here; renegotiate or opt out of NAFTA; do away with Obamacare and replace it with something that will be terrific and the list goes on.

I wonder if he has really thought things through or does he really believe that one is a majority?
