Suspect wounded by blast from his own gun during struggle in West Kelowna home

A Kaleden man who was shot by his own gun in West Kelowna last week has been charged with several criminal offences.

On Dec. 23, West Kelowna RCMP responded to a dropped 911 call where a caller reported a shooting inside a home on Last Road at 5:41 p.m., said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey.

“The suspect attempted to force his way into a home with a loaded shotgun,” he said. “A struggle ensued between the suspect and a resident of the home, during which the suspect was shot in a lower extremity.”

The suspect fled the scene and went to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.

He was released after receiving medical treatment and arrested by RCMP officers at the hospital.

“The ongoing police investigation has revealed that this was an isolated incident, not a random attack,” said O’Donaghey.

“The parties involved in the altercation were well known to each other. No one else inside the home was injured.”

Darryn Allen Nelson, 41, has been charged with several criminal offences, including break and enter, uttering threats and a variety of firearms-related offences, including possession and pointing a firearm.

He has been in custody since his arrest and is expected to appear in court on Jan. 5.

The other man involved is not facing charges, said O’Donaghey.

“That person was identified and taken into police custody without incident and questioned prior to being released without charge,” he said. “It is believed that the suspect was the only one with a firearm.”

Nelson has a lengthy criminal record starting in 1996, with charges including theft, breaking and entering, robbery, assault, possession of a controlled substance and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
