Human bone found in park near UBC

VANCOUVER — Police say human remains have been discovered in a park near the University of British Columbia.

University RCMP say a family was out for a walk in Vancouver’s Pacific Spirit Park on Friday afternoon when their dog came out of the forest with what appeared to be a human bone.

The family contacted police and officers began searching the heavily wooded area.

RCMP say forensic examinatio­n confirms that the bone is human.

Police say the origin of the bone is undetermin­ed at this time, but an investigat­ion is ongoing.

Snowmobile­r killed in avalanche

VALEMOUNT, B.C. — Police say a snowmobile­r has died after he was caught in an avalanche near Valemount, B.C.

RCMP say they were called about the slide near the boundary between B.C. and Alberta Friday afternoon.

Officers were told a male on a snowmobile had been caught in the avalanche and died.

Police say search and rescue teams were sent out, but they determined the scene was too unstable and that recovery efforts would have to wait until the area was safe.

The man’s identity has not been released.

Uniting Canadians focus for Trudeau

OTTAWA — The prime minister says his resolution for 2017 is to “stand against the politics of fear and division.”

Trudeau’s New Year’s message released Saturday said he will focus on what brings people together.

The message noted that 2017 marks the country’s 150th anniversar­y, and Canadians will use it to honour past generation­s.

Man with gun shot by police

MONTREAL — A man was in critical condition after being struck with at least one bullet during an earlymorni­ng confrontat­ion with Montreal police on Saturday.

The province’s police oversight agency says officers were called to intervene in a fight outside a bar at about 3 a.m.

According to preliminar­y informatio­n, investigat­ors believe the officers pursued the man when they saw he was carrying a gun.

They say the suspect turned and shot in the direction of the officers, who returned fire.

The independen­t investigat­ions agency is called to investigat­e when a civilian is killed or injured during a police interventi­on. Provincial police were also on site Saturday morning to provide support.
