Hometown Hockey coming to Vernon
Ron MacLean and the Hometown Hockey team are coming to Vernon later this month.
Rogers’ weekly tour will roll into the North Okanagan on Jan. 21 and 22, with former Vancouver Canucks goaltender Kirk McLean — no relation to Ron — also in attendance, among other hometown heroes.
Local residents will have a chance to win ultimate hockey experiences with the “Cheer Like Never Before” and “Trick Shot” contests.
The two-day celebration gets underway Saturday, Jan. 21 at noon PT at Vernon City Hall, and concludes Sunday evening following the Hometown Hockey outdoor viewing party.
Sunday’s broadcast kicks off with a special pre-game show hosted live on site by MacLean and Tara Slone at 4 p.m. PT on Sportsnet, followed by a showdown between the Canucks and Chicago Blackhawks.
The free hockey-themed weekend will feature live local entertainment and food trucks for the whole family.
Leading up to the celebrations in Vernon, local hockey teams can upload a video of their team cheer — for the aforementioned Cheer Like Never Before contest — with the top-five vote-getters invited to participate in the festivities.
With the Trick Shot contest, participants can sign up on site for a chance to show off their skills and win a VIP trip to the 2017 MasterCard Memorial Cup in Windsor, Ont., from May 19 to 28.
Competitors will vie for the title in front of a panel of judges who will crown a winner at each of the 24 stops on the Hometown Hockey tour, with Vernon the 14th stop of the season, followed by Edmonton.
All 24 local winners will then face off in a national contest in Hamilton, Ont., where the best trick shot will be revealed in the final Hometown Hockey broadcast.
