Green Party picks candidate
The B.C. Green Party has nominated a candidate to run in the upcoming provincial election to represent Kelowna-Lake Country.
Alison Shaw is the founder of Flip Side Sustainability and has a PhD in sustainability from the University of British Columbia.
She also worked on the Nobel Prize-winning United Nations intergovernmental panel on climate change to research the relationship between scientists and policy makers.
Shaw had never considered entering politics until recently, she said.
“B.C. politics has been stuck in a cycle of celebrating the professional politician for too long,” she said.
“We have amazing natural and intellectual resources in this province, and yet too many people are struggling, and communities aren’t feeling the benefits of this bounty. With my experience as a business owner and researcher, I believe I can help.”
Andrew Wesver, leader of the B.C. Green Party, offered his support to Shaw.
“I am ecstatic that such a highly-qualified candidate like Alison is stepping forward in this election,” he said.
“Her work with the IPCC and throughout her academic career makes her perfectly placed to bring forward innovative, practical ideas that will make British Columbia a leader in addressing climate change.”
Shaw will be running against Liberal incumbent Norm Letnick for Kelowna-Lake Country.
The provincial election is scheduled for May 9.
