Penticton Volleytech takes title
Penticton Volleytech 02 took the title at the Volleyball BC Okanagan Girls 15-and-under girls’ 2A championship at the Tournament Capital Centre in Kamloops.
Teams from Vernon, Kamloops, Kelowna and Penticton played with six teams competing in the A division and another four teams in the stronger 2A division.
Teams in each division played in the preliminary round-robin to determine who went on to play for first and second place in the final match.
In preliminaries, Volleytech 02 dropped the first set in each of their matches but forced deciding sets when they won their second.
Volleytech found themselves in 2nd place with a record of 5-4 in sets after preliminary play but that was good enough to be awarded a berth in the finals.
Their opponent would be the only team that defeated them in preliminaries – Kamloops Wolf Pack Paul.
Volleytech kept the first set close but the Wolf Pack eventually taking took the set 27–25 in a nailbiter. With something to prove, Volleytech came out hitting and easily defeated the Wolf Pack in the second set 25-12.
The Wolf Pack led the third set by a score of 5-2 when the Volleytech serving proved to be too strong. Volleytech slowly pulled away eventually earning redemption by prevailing in the third set by a score of 15-10.
The Volleytech 02 team consists of players born in 2002 with seven players coming from the Penticton area and five Summerland girls. The team is coached by Huan Pham and Hannah Walton.
The team has qualified to compete in the top tier (Division 1) at the provincial championships May 5-6 in Abbotsford.
