State of emergency declared at Summerland Yacht Club

- By JOE FRIES

A second state of local emergency has been declared in Summerland as a result of flooding.

The declaration is limited to the property at 13209 Lakeshore Dr. occupied by the Summerland Yacht Club, which had its power shut off.

“Rising water levels have caused safety issues within the electrical junction boxes, which supply power to a building located in the southeast corner of the property and the docks at the yacht club,” the District of Summerland said in a press release issued Wednesday night.

It followed a declaration of a state of emergency a day earlier for 14 properties in Trout Creek that also had their power cut as a result of safety concerns — and there could be more to come.

“Residents in the Landry Crescent and Randall Street area should be aware that there is concern that with a further increase in lake levels, the electrical system providing service in this area may become compromised creating the need to disconnect power,” the district also noted in Wednesday’s release.

Okanagan Lake was at 343.18 metres above sea level as of noon Thursday, according to Environment Canada data.

The B.C. government is now projecting it to top out at 343.25 metres the week of June 10.

Given that new predicted high — plus a 60-centimetre allowance for wave action — the district is asking waterfront residents to reassess their flood protection.

Filled sandbags will be available at the Summerland arena today from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for those who want to bolster their defences.
