Parking crisis at SOEC, casino
Dear Editor: I see that the insanity at city hall continues unabated in spite of some shuffling of the deck chairs of senior staff. I am referring to the proposal to install two more sheets of ice adjacent to the SOEC with further loss of much needed parking for SOEC events.
These events provide the revenue that is needed to support the costs of operation of the centre. Loss of potential revenue will result in further cost to the taxpayer through increased subsidy.
If two additional sheets of ice are required, site them elsewhere where they will not affect the SOEC. If necessary, lease land from the Penticton Indian Band across the new bridge where ample parking can be provided for that facility.
We are already aware that the SOEC revenues will be adversely affected by the installation of the casino on the grounds. This facility takes up a lot of space for the building itself as well as the parking allocated to the casino.
Incidentally, how can the city police whether cars in the parking lot are frequenting the casino or an event at the SOEC or other public facility on the site? The casino could use well over their allocated amount of parking further compounding the parking problem for the SOEC.
There is a proposal that the tourist information centre that was evicted by the casino will be relocated to the unused entry road to the complex from Eckhardt Ave. This road was basically useless since the City did not obtain approval from the highways department to use it prior to constructing it.
