Every day is a great one in the South Okanagan

- JAMES MILLER

Afew random thoughts to end what’s been a great week here in the Peach City. An eclipse, a world championship triathlon, and a bathtub race. Every day is a great one in the South Okanagan.

I was at the “Red and White” party and medal ceremonies for a few minutes, Wednesday, at Gyro Park. I’d like to pass along the many kind words I heard about the band, One 2 Many, which had the house rocking until 11 p.m. The band features an all-star team of musicians from the South Okanagan who due to distance only play a few gigs each year.

I was also at a “bun party” (don’t ask, because I’m not sure what it means either) and was pleased to meet the founder plus an original member of the Naramata Choir. It’s been about 55 years since the choir was formed and they’re still providing the valley with amazing music. The toughest thing is founding an organization. The next toughest thing is keeping it going.

Milo made a surprise appearance at a ladies fitness class with one of his aunties. He was a big hit with the ladies. With the exception of me, Milo much prefers the company of women to men. I’m told that’s not unusual for a dog to prefer one gender ahead of the other.

A good friend back home had a male schnauzer, Chunky, who loved men. Chunky’s favourite night of the week was Monday when the whole gang came over for Monday Night Football. Chunky never cared for the off-season.

John Lennon was gone far too soon.

You gotta feel for Rich Hill, even if you’re not a Dodgers fan. Hill was working on a perfect game until an error in the bottom of the ninth cost him his perfect game.

He then blew his no-hitter with a walkoff solo homer in the bottom of the tenth inning by Josh Harrison to give the Pirates a 1-0 win.

It was Hill’s 99th pitch of the game. Wins/losses is a dumb baseball stat. Hill pitched a hell of a game and gets tagged with a loss.

It’s time for the City of Penticton to make Sister Madonna Buder an honourary citizen of Penticton, similar to what Roth, Germany did for Belinda Greanger in 2013.

I just saw “King Kong Skull Island” on home video, a totally unnecessary reboot. The cool twist was this movie takes place during the final months of the Vietnam War. Apparently a sequel is forthcoming. I have an idea for the filmmakers. Kong moves to the Penticton and runs for a seat on Penticton City Council. The Skullcrawlers serves as Kong’s campaign manager. That would be cool.

Happy 50th anniversary to Rory and Anna McIvor of Penticton. See their anniversary announcement (which is actually on Saturday) on our Living page (Page A2). It looks like they they haven’t changed a bit in 50 years.
