Ultra520K triathlon under new leadership, but continuing in Penticton

Brown reducing role in ultra-distance event

-

Steve Brown is taking a step back but Ultra520K Canada is going forward for the foreseeable future.

The founder and race director of the Penticton-based event had announced earlier this year that the 2017 and 2018 races would be the final years for the three-day, ultra-distance triathlon.

Brown said a group of the main organizers of the event came forward with a plan to keep Ultra520K going, while allowing the 62-year-old Penticton resident to scale back his involvement.

“The group will spearhead the event going forward and I will serve as a consultant,” said Brown. “They wanted to give me a voice at the table to ensure the quality and principles of the event continue to the standards we have always run it.”

Brown said he was also getting lot of support and encouragement from the athlete community to continue.

“The (August) 2018 event is already full and I’m still getting requests to do the event. Following through on those requests it is becoming obvious that we need to keep moving the event forward,” said Brown.

Brown said registration is open for those athletes waitlisted for the 2018 race and those that expressed a willingness to support a 2019 event.

He said there are 15 confirmations for the 35 available spots for 2019.

“We are opening registration for 2019 for general registration to all athletes,” he said.
