Pen-Hi girls putting undefeated volleyball record on line

Regular season play is winding down in the South Okanagan junior boys’ and girls’ volleyball leagues, with another key slate of games set for today.

The undefeated Pen-Hi Lakers Grade 10s have opened up a commanding lead in the junior girls’ league, but it’s a dogfight in the junior boys’ group with five of the six teams right in the hunt for top spot.

JUNIOR GIRLS: Pen-Hi 10s are a perfect 7-0 in matches and 14-0 in games and could clinch first place today with matches at home against Similkamee­n and the Pen-Hi 9s.

The Princess Margaret Mustangs and Summerland Rockets are tied for second at 5-2 (11-5 in games). Rounding out the standings: Pen-Hi 9s (4-3, 8-8), Southern Okanagan (3-4, 8-10), Osoyoos (2-5, 5-11), Similkamee­n (25, 4-12), Princeton (0-7, 4-14).

Other matches today at Pen-Hi see Pen-Hi 9s face Princeton and Similkamee­n take on Princeton. There are also four matches in Summerland with Osoyoos, Princess Margaret, Southern Okanagan and the host Rockets in action.

In action last week in Summerland, the Pen-Hi 10s posted a key 25-15, 25-11 decision over Maggie, a 25-8, 25-11 decision over the Pen-Hi 9s, and a 25-10, 25-14 win over the Rockets. Summerland beat Pen-Hi 9s 25-5, 2516, Maggie outlasted Summerland 15-25, 2511, 15-9 and also beat the Pen-Hi 9s 25-20, 26-24.

League plays wraps up with full slates of games Oct. 26 and 27, with playoffs on Nov. 9 or 10 hosted by the regular season champion, which looks certain to be Pen-Hi.

JUNIOR BOYS: With each team having played four matches, Summerland and Maggie are tied at 3-1, with the Rockets holding the slight edge in game records at 7-3, compared to 7-4 for the Mustangs.

Pen-Hi 9s, Pen-Hi 10s and Southern Okanagan are tied for third at 2-2 in matches. The Pen-Hi 9s are 5-4 in games, while the PenHi 10s and SOSS are 5-5 in games. Similkamee­n is winless in four matches.

Summerland and Pen-Hi will each host three matches today.

In Summerland, Similkamee­n, Princess Margaret and the host Rockets play a roundrobin (2 matches each).

At Pen-Hi, Southern Okanagan and the two Pen-Hi teams play a similar round-robin.

In action last week at Pen-Hi, Princess Margaret prevailed 25-13, 25-9 over Similkamee­n and 25-22, 25-14 over the Pen-Hi 9s, with the Pen-Hi 9s downing Similkamee­n 25-13, 25-16.

At South Okanagan, the host Hornets lost a pair of tough three-setters – 24-26, 25-20, 16-14 to Summerland, and 24-26, 25-22, 15-9 to PenHi 10s. Summerland also beat the Pen-Hi 10s 25-12, 25-20.
