A new taxi service is bringing cabs to Okanagan Falls residents.

Penticton Eco Taxi recently hit the roads with a fleet of two wheelchair accessible vans and four Toyota Prius hybrid cabs.

Owner Balraj Gill, a Penticton resident of 15 years, said he is realizing his dream of owning his own cab company after a decade working in the industry in Penticton.

“I used to work for other cab companies,” Gill said. “It’s my dream to bring good customer service and clean, no-smoke vehicles.”

Gill said there is a shortage of cabs in Penticton, sometimes making for long waiting times for the public.

In his application to the B.C. Passenger Transportation Board earlier this year, he attached dozens of letters of support from Okanagan Falls residents and businesses plus the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen

The new taxis will service an area from Summerland south to Okanagan Falls, and east from Apex Mountain and Twin Lakes to Naramata.

Gill has a few drivers lined up, but is still accepting applications those interested in full-time and part-time jobs. The company can be reached at 250-488-9999.

“Business has been good,” Gill added.

Once people have a ride with Penticton Eco Taxi, they’re not calling any other company.”

With the addition of Penticton Eco Taxi, there were a total of 46 licensed cabs within the RDOS as of Dec. 18, according to data from the B.C. Passenger Transportation Board.
