Young adults can get help coping with anxiety

YMCA Okanagan is offering a mindfulnes­s program to help young adults cope with anxiety.

“Y Mind will give young adults the tools to be able to cope with the stressors that are going on in life right now,” said Y Mind manager, Jan Locke. “So many individual­s today feel the environmen­t and world they live in creates anxiety, and it can be extremely overwhelmi­ng. This program will help to take away the isolation and debilitati­on of anxiety.”

Mindfulnes­s groups are open to people between the ages of 18 and 30, who are experienci­ng mild to moderate anxiety.

There is no cost to participat­e and referrals are not required.

Participan­ts will learn evidence-based coping strategies and participat­e in activities led by trained mental-health profession­als.

Each person will also receive a compliment­ary health and fitness membership to their local YMCA for the duration of the program.

The first session begins Jan. 31 at the Kelowna Family Y in Rutland and runs Wednesdays from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.until March 14.

The second session will be held at the Kelowna Family Y, Wednesdays from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Oct. 3-Nov. 14,

The third session will be held at Foundry Kelowna, 100 - 1815 Kirschner Rd., Tuesdays from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m, Oct. 9-Nov. 20.

Informatio­n sessions will be held Jan. 10, Jan. 17, March 13, March 20, Sept 11, Sept. 12, Sept. 19 and Sept. 25.
