Too many rude Kelowna drivers

- Jessie Huber Kelowna

Dear editor: I am originally from Alberta having lived in the big city of Calgary and small town of Bonnyvillle, so I am used to walking with a huge amount of traffic while remaining safe. I have never had a problem with drivers almost running me over.

My girlfriend says it’s normal for Kelowna and that’s why it’s called an accident. I disagree.

Now I live in the most beautiful place on earth but I’m not sure it is worth my life.

My girlfriend and I were out for our nightly fast-paced walk on the less-busy streets to keep fit and enjoy the city we live in.

At the end of our walk, we decided to go and buy a cucumber for our pet guinea pigs. We went to cross Richter while walking on Bernard when a car was in such a big hurry to turn left he was trying to rush us across by slowly inching ahead. We can’t run across the street with all the ice and he should wait his turn.

Anyways, we are the ones walking. It’s not like we were walking slow.

I have driver’s training and you’re not supposed to even turn your wheels till the crosswalk is clear to make a turn but, for some reason in this city, a lot of drivers are in huge hurry and won’t follow common sense rules of the road.

The driver had nowhere to go because he already crossed the oncoming traffic lane while we were crossing. So instead of him running us over, he let the oncoming truck hit him.

When I arrived home, I checked my fit app and it said I walked more than 2,000 steps. I wondered how many were life threatening from intersections.

I walk once a night for an hour and see a lot of accidents, quite often two in the same evening. This can be prevented by simply not rushing and keeping the intersection clear while waiting your turn to make a left turn.

Thank you for reading my story and hopefully I one day can walk safely across crosswalks in beautiful Kelowna.
