Loewen lifts Lakers past Mt. Boucherie

Kali Loewen collected 17 points, eight rebounds and four steals to lead the Pen-Hi Lakers to a 44-41 triumph over Mount Boucherie in Valley senior girls’ 3A basketball league action Tuesday at the West Kelowna school.

Kalli Doell hit two free throws with four seconds left and the Lakers were able to defend the three-point line to close it out and stay perfect in league play at 4-0.

Jennifer Hayman logged eight points, 11 rebounds, and six steals, Doell ended up with six points, seven rebounds and four steals, and Mattie Philip notched five points, six rebound and three steals.

"A tough, hard-fought win. We struggled to defend their size for much of the game, but the girls stayed with it and managed to get an important road win," said coach Chris Terris. "We're not playing pretty basketball (26 turnovers) and have struggled to shoot the ball (21 per cent) since returning from the break. If we can improve in those two areas, we can make a big jump.

"Kali and Jennifer have really started to click with some high-low action, finding each other for easy looks. They've carried us offensively for much of the season."
