Council backs proposal for Highway 40 campground

- By SUSAN MCIVER

Summerland council gave the green light Monday to the development of a 15-unit campground at 20201 Highway 40.

“Our operation will be a quiet, familyfriendly campground. Summerland needs affordable recreational accommodations,” property co-owner LeeAnna Jewell told council during the public hearing preceding the vote.

No opposition was expressed at the hearing or in correspondence to council.

LeeAnna and husband, Jayson Jewell, applied to council to change the zoning and Official Community Plan designation on the property to allow for the new operation.

The application will now be sent to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.

If approved, it will be returned to council for consideration of adoption.

A five-point restrictive covenant will be placed on the title of the property.

These restrictions include that campfires are permitted in only one centrally located fire pit, operation is seasonal between April 1 and Oct. 30 and that camping is limited to no longer than 30 consecutive days.

Only recreational vehicles with self-contained water and septic disposal systems will be allowed until such time as the campground has washroom facilities meeting the minimum requirements of the Provincial Health Authority.
