A member of the 259 Penticton Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron is spending the summer working in the aircraft maintenance department at the Comox Cadet Flying Training Centre.

“I took the air maintenance course through the cadet program and I love it so much that I wanted to apply for the position here,” said 17-year-old Theo Morrison, whose brother, Oscar, is a pilot instructor on the very same gliders.

“I thought it would be cool to work on the gliders in which my brother was instructing,” Morrison added.

He works in the hangar alongside aircraft maintenance technicians with years of experience, and learns all the aspects of the job from washing a glider to doing a service on a tow plane.

It is great experience for any youth interested in aircraft mechanics.

Morrison, who just graduated from Penticton Secondary School, has been a cadet for six years.

“I love the community in cadets and I love the idea of a structured organization,” he said.

This summer, 39 cadets are on the glider pilot scholarship course at Comox Cadet Flying Centre and hope to receive their glider pilot licence.

Another 28 cadets hope to earn their private pilot licence through the centre by the end of August, and 80 cadets will take the advanced aviation course there.
