Mixed results for Canadian men
Shapovalov advances to 3rd round at Rogers Cup, but Raonic, Auger-Aliassime eliminated on Wednesday
TORONTO (CP) — Denis Shapovalov was successful in reaching the third round of the Rogers Cup, but two of his fellow Canadians suffered disappointing defeats Wednesday.
Shapovalov, a 19-year-old from Richmond Hill, Ont., advanced by defeating Fabio Fognini, a 14th-seeded Italian, 6-3, 7-5 in a match that was delayed for hours and then interrupted in the first set by heavy rains.
Shapovalov fired nine aces and won 82 per cent of his service games. He also broke Fognini three times in the second set — two to erase a 4-0 deficit and one more to go up 6-5 — before holding serve for the win.
At No. 26, Shapovalov is the highest ranked Canadian in the men’s draw. He rose to prominence last year with a stellar run at the Rogers Cup in Montreal that ended with a semifinal loss to eventual champion Alexander Zverev.
Shapovalov will face Robin Haase of the Netherlands in the third round today.
Fellow Canadian Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ont., saw his tournament end with a 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-1 loss to No. 41 Frances Tiafoe of the United States in a match that was also delayed and interrupted by rain.
Montreal’s Felix Auger-Aliassime also bowed out on his 18th birthday with a three-set loss to Russian qualifier Daniil Medvedev 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (9).
Toronto’s Daniel Nestor and Vernon’s Vasek Pospisil lost their doubles match to Feliciano and Marc Lopez 6-7 (8), 6-2, 10-6.
