RCMP in Osoyoos have made a quick arrest of a woman accused of walking into a young mom’s home and lunging at her with a knife, after asking to see her baby.

On Thursday, one day after the bizarre incident, police arrested a 45-year-old Osoyoos woman. She is in custody and expected to appear in a Penticton courtroom later today.

It was on Wednesday, shortly before 9 a.m., when the young mom said the stranger just walked into her 78 Avenue home.

The accused, wearing dish gloves, allegedly asked to see the woman’s baby.

The victim pushed the woman out of the doorway, and that’s when the suspect allegedly grabbed a weapon concealed in her waistband and forced her way back into the home, said Sgt. Jason Bayda, Osoyoos detachment commander.

The victim, who had two young children with her, managed to push the woman out of the door once again, locking it and calling 911.

The interaction was caught on the homeowner’s surveillance camera and shared on Facebook.

The victim said the suspect was wearing a wig and could be transgender. Initial patrols for the woman were unsuccessful on Wednesday, said police. But shortly after, officers were able to identify the suspect and efforts were underway to locate her.

By 1 p.m. on Thursday, she was arrested.

“We understand that this incident was very traumatic for this new mother,” Bayda said.

In a post on Facebook, the young mother said she was terrified to be in her own home.

The name of the suspect was not released pending today’s court appearance.
