Sun set to face rival Rebels today in Victoria

- By Okanagan Weekend Staff

The Okanagan Sun are back in action today, visiting the Westshore Rebels in Victoria in a battle of unbeaten teams in Week 2 of the B.C. Football Conference schedule.

The Sun (1-0), who are starting their season with a four-game road trip due to renovations at the Apple Bowl in Kelowna and won’t play their home opener until Sept. 8, are coming off a season-opening 56-6 blowout over the Kamloops Broncos last Sunday.

The Rebels (1-0) opened with a hard-fought 19-16 road win over the Langley Rams. Today’s kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at Westhills Stadium.

The other Week 2 matchups have Langley in Chilliwack tonight against the Valley Huskers, who surprisingly rallied to win their opener 33-31 over the Vancouver Island Raiders, who host Kamloops in Nanaimo today.

The Huskers went winless (0-10) in 2017, while the Raiders are the defending BCFC champions after beating the Rebels 21-7 in last year’s Cullen Cup final at Victoria on Oct. 21.

The Sun bowed out in the semifinals in 2017, losing to the Raiders 15-8 at the Apple Bowl on Oct. 15, while the Rebels advanced with a 57-14 romp over the Rams in Victoria.

The Sun split their 2017 season series with the Rebels, bookending the campaign against Westshore with an opening 19-15 win at the Apple Bowl before falling 30-19 in the finale at Victoria, which was a first-place showdown.

Westshore earned the top playoff seed with a record of 9-1-0, while Okanagan settled for second place at 8-1-1, having tied Vancouver Island 31-31 at the Apple Bowl in Week 6.
