UBCO set to welcome alumni, staff back home

Homecoming celebratio­ns next weekend will include street festival, food, soccer game

UBC Okanagan is hosting a homecoming event for alumni, students, faculty, staff and the community next weekend.

The weekend will include a street festival, food, a soccer game between the UBC Thunderbir­ds and UBC Okanagan Heat, a scavenger hunt and more.

On Friday, Oct. 19, there will be a kickoff breakfast from 8:30 to 11 a.m. The breakfast is free for students, and $3 for faculty and staff.

The earth, environmen­tal and geographic sciences department is hosting a free barbecue from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday.

At 6 p.m. Friday, there will be a street festival with music by local country star Ben Klick, carnival games, food trucks and a beer garden.

On Friday, there are also a variety of events for alumni of visual arts, management, nursing and social work.

An engineerin­g extravagan­za event will take place Saturday from 11 a.m. to noon, while a chemistry discovery event will take place that day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The free men’s soccer match will be at 1 p.m. Saturday.

A scavenger hunt will take place at 3 p.m. afternoon. The cost is $20 per team of four people.

On Saturday evening, a harvest reception will feature more than 20 tasting stations from Okanagan restaurate­urs, winemakers, craft brewers and cider producers.

The event, Nourish, will begin with a talk by Canadian Olympic skeleton champion Jon Montgomery.

Montgomery, who is the host of the Amazing Race Canada, will share the story of his Olympic journey and discuss lessons he learned about teamwork, leadership and dreaming big.
