Sun can clinch 1st place with home win tonight
The Okanagan Sun will look to lock up first place tonight — as well as home-field advantage throughout the B.C. Football Conference playoffs — when they host the rival Westshore Rebels of Victoria in a 7 p.m. kickoff at the Apple Bowl in Kelowna. The Sun (6-2-1) are on a four-game winning streak and will clinch top spot in the standings with another victory in tonight’s regular-season finale.
Okanagan previously tied the Rebels 18-18 in Victoria on Aug. 11 — way back in Week 2 of the 10-game schedule.
The Rebels (3-5-1) have lost three in a row, continuing to struggle since former Sun coach Shane Beatty took over as their bench boss. Westshore has been eliminated from playoff contention, destined to finish fifth in the sixteam conference regardless of tonight’s result, but Beatty and the Rebels will be looking to play spoiler against the Sun.
Okanagan is only one point ahead of the Langley Rams and Valley Huskers of Chilliwack, both with 6-3-0 records, so a loss to the Rebels would likely drop the Sun to second and possibly even third place.
All six teams wrap up the regular season today, with Langley in Kamloops against the winless Broncos (0-9-0), while Chilliwack is visiting the fourth-place Vancouver Island Raiders (5-4-0) in Nanaimo.
