Penticton show will be one of Default’s last together

- By MELANIE EKSAL

Default will be putting the mic away for good after one final tour that will see a stop at the South Okanagan Events Centre on Oct. 23. Having made their debut in the late 1990s with hits such as “Wasting My Time” and “Deny,” bandmates went their separate ways in 2013, only four years after the release of their fourth and final album. They had wound down their tours back in 2010.

Lead singer Dallas Smith continued his music career, but not in rock and roll. Instead, he made his break in country, a genre of music he’s always had a passion for.

“It was an easy transition for me. I grew up with a lot of country as a kid. I just found myself listening to Rascal Flatts and Keith Urban as I aged,” Smith said in a phone interview.

Smith was hesitant at first when the opportunity to reconvene with his old bandmates and tour across Canada arose, but touring with Stone Temple Pilots, as he says, will be a neat end to Default’s final chapter in music.

“I sang a couple songs with the guys that ended up being Default then we formed the band. Funny how full circle this is,” said Smith in reference to their final tour with STP.

“‘Flush’ by Stone Temple Pilots was the first song we sang together.”

He believes that “something is happening for a reason,” considering Default started as a band with STP’s music, and is now finally coming to end by sharing a stage with them.

“It’s obviously one of those things you have a mixed emotions about … (but) I think it’s going to be a really great way to play some of the songs that people recognize and a proper close of that chapter,” said Smith.

Born and raised in B.C., Smith is familiar with the Okanagan and looks forward to returning; he married his wife in Kelowna in 2015.

He was at the SOEC last November for his “Side Effects” tour.

Tickets for Default with Stone Temple Pilots and Seether are on sale now at the SOEC box office and start at $42.50.
