Jakubeit backed fire arbitration
Dear editor: Re: Fired up to bring back Jakubeit, Herald, Letters, Oct. 4
I wish to point out some inaccuracies in a recent letter from Marc Tougas (retired Penticton firefighter) who alleges it was a past city council and not the current city council led by Mayor Jakubeit “who went so far as to take the Penticton firefighters to B.C. Supreme Court to argue that Penticton is different than other communities in B.C. “and challenged an arbitrator’s award for firefighters’ wages.
It was in fact the current council led by Jakubeit that challenged an arbitrator’s decision made in July 2015 by approving in an in-camera meeting on Oct. 5, 2015, that the city should file an appeal to the arbitrator’s decision.
The city subsequently lost this needless appeal.
While Tougas’s letter seems to support Jakubeit, which he is fully entitled to do, it seems to me the example he uses in fact demonstrates exactly the opposite showing extremely poor judgement on the part of Jakubeit and the current council.
This is one of the many instances where Jakubeit has repeatedly made poor decisions and cost this city significant wasted tax dollars in legal fees and/or other types of settlements and should not be voted for. Gord Hartford Penticton Den on multi-colored Front Street.
