Managing for wildlife on the farm

-

Agricultural workers and farmers who would like to finesse their skills in animal management will have the opportunity to learn how to do so on Wednesday, Nov. 14.

“Managing for Wildlife on the Farm,” a workshop hosted by the Okanagan Similkameen Conservation Alliance will run from 9 a.m. to noon and teach participants how to safely and effectively interact with wild animals that may appear on their property.

The topics will cover animals such as bears, bats, birds, amphibians and rattlesnakes.

“For those working the land on a daily basis in farming and agriculture, there are some very simple but effective things they can do to help protect those species,” OSCA ECOstudies coordinator Tanya Brouwers said in a press release.

The goal is to ensure that farmers and agricultural workers remain safe, but so do the lives of vulnerable and threatened species.

Admission for the workshop is free and it will be held at the Nature Trust of B.C.’s Okanagan Falls Biodiversity Ranch at 3831 McLean Creek Road in Okanagan Falls. Participants are encouraged to register in advance as space is limited and can do so by contacting Brouwers at 250-490-6279 or ecostudies@osca.org

Final meetings for some familiar faces

There will be some tears, or perhaps sighs of reliefs, as many longtime elected officials will participate in their final municipal meetings.

Tonight will be the final Okanagan Skaha School District meeting for both Ginny Manning, a trustee for the past 16 years, and Bruce Johnson, a trustee since 2011.

Manning was defeated in this month’s municipal election by 11 votes and Johnson decided not to seek re-election, mostly due to health concerns.

Bill Bidlake left the board in August in order to accompany his wife abroad on an international teaching assignment. Tonight’s meeting at the education centre beings at 6:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, Penticton City Council will bid adieu to Mayor Andrew Jakubeit, first elected to council in 2008 and then mayor in 2014. He lost the municipal election to John Vassilaki. Coun. Max Picton, who was also defeated in the municipal election, will also participate in this final meeting along with Helena Konanz, Andre Martin and Tarik Sayeed, all who did not seek re-election. The meeting begins at 1 p.m.

On Tuesday evening, the final meeting of Oliver Council will be held. Mayor Ron Hovanes and long-time Coun. Maureen Doer, both failed in their bids for re-election.
