Friend of Penticton women throws party in between their birthdays

- By MELANIE EKSAL

When you see Dorothy Gorner and Martha Sandy walk into a room, you wouldn’t believe they’re both over 100 years old.

The two Penticton residents celebrated their birthdays surrounded by loves ones Monday afternoon.

Gorner turned 101 on Jan. 2, and Sandy turns 101 on Feb. 22, but party organizer Connie Hudson wanted to throw a celebration in between.

“We lit the candles and had lunch, and everybody really enjoyed it,” said Hudson.

Gorner and Sandy were joined by their friends from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

“We wanted to ask them for some tips on how to make it through the next 20 years but didn’t get around to it. We were having so many laughs,” said Hudson.

Hudson said she’s known both women for many years, after moving to the Okanagan. She met them through the church and seniors single group she leads.

“The group gets together twice a month for social events, and we really try to keep active socially,” said Hudson. “It’s not every day you have two people turning 101!”

Hudson said she connected with both ladies and is close with Gorner, who would walk from her home to Hudson’s and join her for picnics.

“If anyone met Sandy, they wouldn’t believe she’s 101. They’d probably guess her to be 80,” added Hudson. “She really is just amazing.”

Both birthday girls declined to talk to a Herald reporter because they wished to spend the afternoon with their loved ones.
